How to use this calculator
Record the complete project material cost, the hours you worked and a fair hourly rate. Add fixed costs and expected selling fees. Choose your intended profit margin. The calculator estimates the price needed to cover these inputs.
Frequently asked question
Is the result my net take-home income? Not necessarily. Taxes, refunds, ad spending, shipping and any other omitted expenses can reduce take-home earnings. Enter applicable expenses explicitly.
Crochet planning guide
How to price handmade crochet fairly
Start with the actual materials used, including yarn, notions, packaging and wastage. Add labour hours multiplied by your target hourly rate, then account for overhead and selling fees.
A worked pricing example
If materials cost $12, labour takes 4 hours at $15 per hour and other direct costs are $3, the base cost is $75 before any marketplace fees, taxes or additional profit. Use your own actual numbers rather than treating this as a recommended market price.
Understand margin versus markup
Markup is calculated relative to cost, while profit margin is calculated relative to the selling price. A 20% markup does not equal a 20% profit margin. Review the calculator’s assumptions before setting a price.
Check fees and market fit
Marketplace payment fees, refunds, shipping subsidies, discounts and taxes can reduce earnings. Compare similar products for positioning, but avoid pricing below your sustainable costs without a clear reason.
Common questions
Should I charge for my time?
Yes, include the hours you spend making, finishing and packaging the item when estimating a sustainable price.
Does the estimate include tax?
Do not assume so. Check the inputs and calculate applicable taxes and platform-specific fees separately.
