Yarn & Skein Calculator

Estimate skeins, yardage and yarn cost using real swatch consumption and the planned area of your crochet project.

Typically accounts for variation
Optional; enter zero if unknown

How to use this calculator

Crochet a representative swatch, measure its area and unravel or weigh it to estimate yardage consumed. Estimate your project area in the same units, then enter the skein length and a suitable allowance for borders, variation and joins.

Frequently asked question

Is this accurate for every stitch pattern? No. It assumes consistent yarn usage per area. Textured stitches, shaping, uneven patterns and decorative borders can change consumption substantially.

Crochet planning guide

How to estimate the number of skeins

Divide total project yardage by the usable yardage per skein, then round up to a whole skein. If your project needs 920 yards and each skein contains 220 yards, you need 5 skeins before any additional allowance.

Allow for a sensible yarn buffer

Extra yarn may be needed for swatching, joining, borders and differences in tension. A buffer is a planning allowance, not a guaranteed percentage. Check dye lots before buying more yarn.

Substituting a different yarn

Compare total length, fibre composition, weight category and measured gauge—not only grams on the label. Two 100 g skeins can have very different lengths.

Estimate limitations

Yarn use changes with stitch density, hook size, colourwork, texture and personal tension. A measured swatch is more reliable than a generic blanket-size chart.

Common questions

Why round up the skein count?

Most yarn is sold in whole skeins, so a fractional requirement usually means buying the next whole skein.

Can I use metres instead of yards?

Use one unit consistently for required length and length per skein. Convert units first if your labels differ.
